How an electron microscope works isn’t nearly as complicated as it first seems. In fact it’s actually very simple. It uses electrons to increase magnification. A standard microscope uses light waves to increase magnification. An electron microscope employs the use of electrons to do the same thing.

Most people will never have reason to use an electron microscope. In actuality a traditional microscope will be more than sufficient for any type of study that is needed. However many research facilities turn to these microscopes each and everyday. They use them to study different cells or molecules. Many medical research facilities study diseased cells trying to find new methods of treatment.

It would seem that this is relatively new technology but that’s not true at all. In fact the first electron microscope was put into use during the 1930s. That means that manufacturers have had more than seventy years to perfect the instrument. It has changed dramatically since that time but the fundamentals are still the same.

Children may learn about this type of microscope while studying science but the chances of them having the opportunity to use one aren’t very good. Instead they will be introduced to compound microscopes which they will use to examine specimens that they’ve prepared.

They will be fascinated with the technology though and depending on their career choice they may just use one at some point. Many industries rely on all types of microscopes for daily operations.
