What is a Microscope Slide?

Almost everyone has used a microscope at some point in their lives. For most people that was back in elementary school in science class. For others it was at home with their own microscope set.

There are many different pieces of a microscope and one very important piece is the microscope slide. It is used to hold whatever you are viewing with the microscope.

A microscope slide is essentially a thin piece of glass. It is rectangular in shape and fits underneath the lens of the microscope. Most slides are the same size but if you are viewing something unusual you may use a different size slide.

In addition to the microscope slide you will need something to protect the material that you place on the slide. This is called a cover glass and is just as it sounds; a very thin piece of glass in a square shape.

When you purchase a microscope kit for your child you’ll notice that it comes complete with several slides and covers. One microscope slide should be used for each item that they child will be viewing. Depending on the item that is being looked at, the slide can be reused.

Children need supervision when using a microscope slide because it is breakable. They should be taught to only handle the sides of the slide instead of placing their finger directly on the surface of it. The reason for this is obvious as the fingerprint will be detected while viewing. Children of course probably won’t mind this but any good scientist will tell you it’s not the best thing to do.

The small covers are also difficult to handle and it’s important that a parent supervise. Once the item has been placed on the slide simply place a cover over top. Again touching only the edges is advisable, so you get a very clear view of your item.
